“Snow falls in Avellino tonight,” read a message on the Atalanta website. “Atalanta will leave for Avellino at 07.55 GMT today and will be unable to enter the stadium. Without further ado, we announce that the game against Villarreal in tonight’s round of 32 qualifier has been postponed.”

Villarreal said: “We are delighted to announce that we will play in Spain tomorrow against Alicante in the second leg of the Champions League round of 32 qualifier.”

Atalanta qualified for the Champions League round of 32 by winning the Italian Super Cup in May. Villarreal also came out on top in the Europa League last season, winning their first trophy in 12 years with a 1-0 win over Sporting in the final.

The expanded Club World Cup will feature 24 teams from Japan, China, South America, and European champions Barcelona and world champions Real Madrid. This week’s draw for the 12-team tournament in Miami includes Japan’s Kashima Antlers, who are the reigning champions after beating Mexico’s Guadalajara in last year’s final.
